Very Thick ice on the Mississippi River.
More than 17" of ice lies upon the mighty Mississippi River here on January 2nd of 2001.  There is more ice at this time than there was when the commemorative of the 150th anniversary of the crossing and exodus of the Latter-day Saints in February of 1996  took place.  As the footprints in the snow show, many people have ventured across the approximately two mile wide river to Montrose Iowa.  Typically the Mississippi River at Nauvoo is rarely safe to cross, do to a deep channel in the middle of the river used for barge traffic during warmer weather.
On the photo on the left, the Temple can barely be seen near the right side of the photo.  Once the tower is complete it will standout way above the trees from this vantage point.  This is the very spot at the West end of Parley Street where the Saints literally crossed the river, back in 1846.  Parley Street is now referred to as the "Trail of Hope".

The cabins in Nauvoo slumber for the Winter.  Next summer they will be used again with reenactors.
